No matter how hard you might try,
spills, drips, and splatters on the carpet are inevitable. If spills aren't
treated quickly and correctly, stains are going to form. Your response must be
quick and effective.
Start by scooping up the solids and
soaking up unabsorbed liquids. Blot -- do not rub or press -- using a white
cloth or disposable paper towel. To avoid spreading the spill even farther,
treat from the outside and work your way in.
Spot clean with soap and water.
Dilute a 1/4 teaspoon clear dishwashing soap with 1 cup lukewarm water. If you
have a solution, spray the stain and lightly mist water over the damaged area
or merely blot with a wet towel. Follow up with a dry cloth and repeat until
satisfied.
Follow these instructions for
cleaning up the more stubborn stains and sticky spots:
Red wine:
1. Blot
2. Apply soapy water
3. Rinse
4. After you have completed those three steps, using a sponge, dribble hot
water onto the area. Using a clean towel, blot and repeat until satisfied.
Soft drinks and coffee:
1. Blot
2. Apply soapy water
3. Rinse
4. Dab on hydrogen peroxide. Wait one hour before repeating the process.
Hydrogen peroxide bleaches a stain without breaking down carpet dyes. Use a 3
percent solution, and apply at full strength.
Candle wax and chewing gum:
These are easiest to remove when
very hot or very cold.
Cold Method:
Place an ice cube inside a plastic bag and rub it on the spot. This should
harden the wax or chewing gum. Once hardened, carefully scrape the residue away
with a dull knife.
Hot Method:
Apply paper towels over the waxy area. Then use a clothes iron on low heat to
soak up the wax. With a plastic bag over your hand, pull the gum off.
Carpet stains don't have to be
permanent. Follow these tips, and your stains will be a thing of the past.
