Avoiding Conflicts with Neighbors

Community association living often means lots of people are living nearby. Sometimes dealing with them can lead to conflict. Communication is usually the best way to prevent and resolve conflict before it reaches the legal system. You don't have to be friends or spend time together to achieve peaceful coexistence, but you should try to be a good neighbor and follow these tips:

Say Hello - At the mailbox, while walking the dog, or when you see a moving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors' names and regularly offer a friendly greeting.

Provide a Heads Up - If you have big plans set for renovations to the house, landscaping projects, or are getting ready to host a party, let your neighbors know beforehand.

Do Unto Others - Treat neighbors as you would like to be treated. Be considerate of noise, vehicles, pets, etc.

Know Your Differences - Make an effort to understand the other person. People come from many different backgrounds. Whether it's age, ethnic background, or simply the number of years that someone has lived in the neighborhood, these differences can lead to different expectations or even misunderstandings.

Consider the View - Keep up with how your property looks. Curb appeal is a great way to show your neighbors that you care about being part of the community.

Appreciate Them - If the neighbors do something you like, let them know. They'll be pleased you noticed, and it will be easier to talk later if they do something you don't like.

Stay Positive - Most people don't try to create problems. Try to avoid assuming that a neighbor has done something deliberately to annoy or irritate you.

Talk Honestly - While tolerance is necessary for almost all aspects of life, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't voice an irritation with someone just because it could be difficult to discuss. If something is bugging you, talk to your neighbors openly.

Be Respectful - Talk directly to your neighbors if there's a problem. Gossiping with others can damage relationships and create trouble.

Remain Calm - Don't react based on emotions when a problem or concern is voiced against you. Thank them and wait for strong emotions to subside before responding.

Listen Carefully - There are always two sides to an issue. Keep your neighbor's perspective in mind when trying to resolve an issue.

Take your time; patience is key. If things start to get heated, or you feel like they could get out of hand, take a break and arrange to finish the conversation at another time.
